A 29-year-old from Caribou, Maine is dead following a crash that happened just after 12:30 AM on Thursday morning, August 5th.

According to Maine Department of Public Safety Spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, 29-year-old Caleb Ewing is believed to have entered the the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 but was travelling the wrong way headed northbound near mile marker 2 in Kittery.

Ewing was eventually struck by an oncoming 18-wheeler which is owned and operated by 46-year-old Joshua Stone of Auburn. Both vehicles reportedly suffered damage, though Stone walked away uninjured. Ewing was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer, which was hauling a load of bottled water at the time of the crash, attempted to avoid a collision when he spotted Ewing coming at him the wrong way, but was unable to fully avoid a collision. The oncoming car struck the side of the truck causing the fuel tank to rupture and diesel fuel to pour into the roadway.

The accident remains under investigation.
